Adding a Netgear EXT 6200 range extender to your network.

This can be implemented as an extender or Access Point (AP).  Realistically if you can run a cable nearby and place the EXT 6200 somewhere near where you want to serve the WIFI signal you should.  That’s what this is about.

Run an Ethernet cable as close as you can to the area where you want to serve with the Access Point.  Plug in an Ethernet cable to the device.  Then configure.

Alright, that seems sort of simple.  Anyone can do it.  But no, the problem comes with the Netgear firmware.  It demands you connect to the IP address of the AP or you connect to their www.wifiext.net address.  If you connect in this fashion it opens a bunch of problems.  First, how do you get the IP address of the device when your DHCP service on your network doesn’t show it?  www.wifiext.net is an internal address to the ext 6200 however if you connect to it via the ethernet cable on a computer your connection will not be recognized even if the device is serving you a page saying you aren’t connected.  That’s bullshit.  You have to be connected to get the message that you aren’t connected.  LoL.

Here’s the tragic part.  If you have the EXT 6200 on your network but your computer isn’t directly connected to it (like with an ethernet cable) and you enter www.wifiext.net you will get a page out on the internet that is used to serve ads and exploit users. So if you get anything that looks links to ads then do not follow them.  You are not connected.  Do not continue.  Check to ensure your computer is connected directly to the AP/Range Extender or you could end up in big trouble. Netgear should have done something about this a long time ago as it creates an extremely dangerous situation for consumers.

Alright, so the easiest way I found to resolve this is to get a device that has wireless capabilities (preferably not a cell phone because the screen is too small to clearly show you what you need to enter, etc).

So, a laptop or a larger tablet will work.  Then connect to the AP and choose to set it up as a new device.  You’ll be asked to create a new account and to answer questions such as your sister’s name.

Go through all that then set up the SSID and security options and password.

Once done you should be able to connect to the internet via wireless devices.

So, connect one Ethernet port to your normal network.  Connect to your device with WIFI.  Set up a new account, answer wireless options and security questions.  Go from there.

In my case I was not able to get back to the configuration page of the AP.  All I get is a dark gray web page.  Haven’t resolved that.

This just goes to show you how poorly developed these products from even long standing company is.  Which, BTW is telling of the computer industry.
